Video Production Seminar

This coming March 6-8, I’m invited to be a resource speaker in a video production seminar for government employees. I’m excited about it and I’ll be telling you how it goes soon.

I haven’t taught for a while now and I admit I’m also a bit nervous. The last time I did lecturing was when I was a teacher in a college university. That was last year already so I have to practice again. Specially because the attendees in this seminar are adult learners and not young students.

Lessons for the Seminar

Actually, the lessons that I will be teaching there are all discussed here in my website. These are writing for videos, video shooting, and video editing. In fact, if you give your time for those lessons and take those lessons into action, you can already learn from here alone. And those lessons are for free! Though if you want to get more serious and learn in more in-depth, you can also try Film School Secrets or No Budget Film Making.

1. Script Writing And Screen Writing

Many video makers, specially those who are doing home videos, are skipping this part. It seems that it is exciting to shoot videos right away so you don’t have to plan for it whatsoever. While this works in some cases like in documenting events where in you don’t have to write a script really, script writing is essential in many kinds of video making like documentaries, movies, music videos, commercials, etc.

2. Video Shooting

Anyone can just grab that camcorder and point it to something then press the record button to capture the shots. However, not everyone can compose those shots and make those videos friendly to our eyes. Therefore, it is necessary to learn those video shooting techniques in order to create great looking videos.

3. Video Editing

This is what I do everyday and it is already just a normal thing for me. This last step in the video making process needs technical skills in using a video editing software and also artistry in putting those videos together. There are so many video editing programs out there but for me, I use Adobe Premiere.

It’s actually a challenge teaching all those stuffs in a 3-day seminar. I guess I’ll have no problem with the script writing part but I’m a bit thinking of what to do in video shooting and editing. That’s because I’m not sure if everyone can bring a camcorder for the workshop. For the editing part, I’m also not sure if everyone has a laptop and has the software that I will be teaching.

A solution I’m thinking for the shooting is that, I might place them in groups. And for the editing, I might just present them the principles then refer them to my free tutorials here if they want to learn more. It’s not easy teaching video editing in a seminar so I guess that’s the solution.

In any case, let’s wait and see if what will happen. I hope they will learn a lot and good luck for me!
